Maurine Dickerson Research Award

The Maurine Dickerson Research Prize is an academic achievement reward. Two research prizes will be awarded annually: one to students in the traditional undergraduate program, and one to undergraduate students in the adult program. The program recognizes students who have written a paper of outstanding quality. A panel of librarians and teaching faculty will judge the submitted works through a blind review process. The award is named in honor of Maurine Dickerson, the first librarian at MidAmerica Nazarene University.

Papers must be submitted to Lauren Hays, Instructional and Research Librarian, by April 7 at 11:59pm. The papers can be sent via e-mail, library@mnu.edu, or delivered in person. Submissions should include a brief description of the paper and information about the class in which it was written, including the professor’s name, the title of the paper, and the name of the student. (The title of the paper should be present on the submitted paper, but the student’s name should not be on the work.) Contact Lauren Hays with any questions, ldhays@mnu.edu, 913-971-3561

Eligible participants are current traditional undergraduate students, and current undergraduate students in the professional program, who have used library resources to write a paper. The submitted work must have been written for a class taught at MidAmerica Nazarene University during the current academic year.

The submitted papers will be judged by three criteria: use of library resources, writing quality, and caliber of research.

Each winner will receive a $250 cash prize and a certificate of recognition. The traditional undergraduate award will be presented during the Honors Chapel and the award given to an undergraduate in a professional program will be presented during a short ceremony in the library.

Celebrated Author Philip White Visits MNU on March 26

On Thursday, March 26, at 7:00 p.m., the Mabee Library will welcome noted author Philip White back to MNU for an author talk and book signing. He will discuss his new book, Whistle Stop: How 31,000 Miles of Train Travel, 352 Speeches, and a Little Midwest Gumption Saved the Presidency of Harry Truman. Philip will not only share fascinating stories about President Harry Truman, but also his experiences in researching and writing this book. Whistle Stop explores how Harry Truman overcame a double split in his party, a Republican "dream ticket," and the Berlin Blockade to win the 1948 election. Author Philip White also tells for the first time the full story of the Democratic Research Division, who dug up talking points on each of the 352 stops Truman made and helped the President connect with audiences across the country.

Chapel Messages Reading Lists

MNU is a community of Christian faith as well as learning, and, therefore, weekly "Community Chapel" services are the heart of our campus. The library is partnering with chapel presenters to develop lists of resources for reading and viewing so those engaged by the presentation can seek further reflection on the topics discussed. Resources can be requested in the library. This guide is available on the library main page, under "Resource Search."
